Mission
Intercommunity Action’s mission is to provide exemplary services in the areas of Aging, Behavioral Health,
and Intellectual Disabilities, for the purpose of assisting people to achieve their maximum potential and enhancing
their quality of life.
History
Intercommunity Action, Inc. Interac was formed in 1969 by a small group of community residents who saw the need for behavioral health,
mental retardation and other human services to be available in their community. Despite having few resources other than their own skill
and determination, they succeeded in obtaining funding to establish the first free-standing community mental health and mental
retardation center in Philadelphia.
Interac's community based, volunteer Board of Directors has overseen the organization's growth from a staff of 20 who provided
mental health intake and counseling services, to a comprehensive human services agency engaging over 600 caring professional and
support staff to provide nearly 40 different types of programs and services to 5,000 people annually. Interac strives, in all of
its programs, to provide the highest possible quality of services, focusing on the strengths, needs and desires of each individual.
